Reflection
(The photo is of a young girl who was offered a waitressing job in Johannesburg, she travelled with a man from her home to South Africa. When she arrived there was no waitressing job, instead he beat her and forced her to work for him as a prostitute.)
My chosen issue was Human Trafficking, I specifically chose and looked at human trafficking within Africa for my social justice issue website. This topic particularly interested me after looking at many videos, personal stories, statistics and information about human trafficking and slavery that still occurs in nearly every country in the world with the worst affected areas being Asia and Africa. I was surprised to see and hear that human trafficking and slavery still existed in our modern society. I became interested in this issue and wanting to help raise awareness of this issue when I read the story of a young boy who was trafficked onto a cocoa farm in Africa to work for hours carrying bags of cocoa beans with the promise of a bicycle he never received.
I specifically chose to target human trafficking in Africa after watching a clip of young African girls most of whom were my age or younger being sold into becoming slaves and led into prostitution in Africa. This video along with the article that I have used as a stimulus piece made me feel angry and frustrated that these girls were being ill treated and their dignity, self belief and human equality taken away from them. These girls are being used for money and many end up with AIDS and or HIV positive. Many girls often become pregnant and due to their age, their bodies have not been fully developed and not able to give birth. These girls are then disowned by the families and tribes and forced out onto the streets in Africa. I believe that every person should be treated equally and with respect to each person’s human rights. Human trafficking and slavery is in deep violation to human rights and many of the Catholic Social Teachings. Many of the existing organisations to help prevent human trafficking such as STOP THE TRAFFIK and Not For Sale are ongoing campaigns to help the rest of the World understand and help support the victims of human trafficking. I have learnt a lot about this social justice issue and hope that my growing passion to help raise awareness for this issue will drive me to continue to help and support the organisations that are trying to stop human trafficking and slavery around the world.
